In 1806, at the age of 19, while still in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut, Isaac married Lucy Tomlinson, of Woodbridge, Connecticut. Born on March 20, 1787, Lucy Tomlinson was the fifth of twelve children of Levi Tomlinson and Amelia Beard. The couple settled in Seymour, Connecticut, barely six miles away from Lucy's birthplace, where Isaac farmed while taking college coursework.

Pioneer and General History of Geauga County, Ohio:
Isaac Chatfield moved into town and settled on lot forty, coming from Connecticut, with his wife and children, Lucius, Albert, Almira, Levi, Nathan, Ruthann, Charles, Charlotte, Maryette, LaFayette, and Georgianna. When he settled in town he was considered quite wealthy, for those times, by the people. He paid down, or nearly so for about three hundred acres of land. Mr. Chatfield erected a large two-story house, took an active part in town politics, and having attended college, and being one of the best readers, he read sermons, and, after the organization of the Episcopalian church, he conducted services, in the absence of the minister; also, he taught school several winters. After the children were all married off, the parents resided in that township until 1860 when they sold to Ozro and Orlow Newcomb. They removed to Ridgeville, Ohio, and have since died.
What is the present township of Huntsburg, and the township of Middlefield, elected their officers together under the name of Batavia, until, and including, the spring election of 1821. The officers chosen at that election…
