Davis Smith Chatfield married Alvina Scofield on 24 Feb 1871 in Ingham Co. MI. Davis was a farmer and resided at Mason in 1870. This was the second marriage for Davis. His first marriage on 14 Dec 1865 at Bunkerhill was to Roby Antinette Hodges, born 12 June 1850 in Bunkerhill, daughter of David Hodges and Elsie Grant. Davis and Roby Antinette Chatfield had a daughter Frances Chatfield born about 1867 in Ingham Co. Davis married a third time on 21 Nov 1875 in Rollin Twp, Lenawee Co. to Laura Elizabeth Chase, daughter of Lewis and Eliza Ann (Blake) Chase. He had three children by Laura in Hudson Twp, Lenawee Co.

Davis enlisted in the Civil War on 29 Mar 1865 in Jackson, MI as a member of Co. K, 16th Regiment, Michigan Volunteers. He was 5 feet 8.5 inches tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He was a farmer at time of enlistment. This unit was discharged at Jeffersonville, IN on 8 July 1865 and Davis applied for a veteran's pension on 5 May 1889 and again on 17 May 1912.
