Josiah is mentioned in the Connecticut list of Revolutionary War soldiers as having served in the 2nd Regiment, Connecticut Line, from January 1, 1781 to December 31, 1781, and is also mentioned as a revolutionary war pensioner of 1818. It appears that there were two of the name who served in the patriot army as one Josiah Chatfield served in Col. Swifts Regiment from December 25, 1780, until the experiation of his term in December 1893.

Deacon Josiah Chatfield was one of the first settlers of Greene Co., NY where he owned a farm in Windham in the Catskill Mountains. He resided there until 1833, when he came to Michigan and located on 160 acres in section 35, Raisin Twp. He died there in 1849, being born in Waterbury, CT. 10 Dec 1775. He married Olive (perhaps Tuttle or Tucker) born in Woodbridge, CT. 24 Feb 1773, and died in Raisin, 20 Aug 1854.
