Plan Open House for 94th Birthday
By Betty Alexander
"I'm just expecting another birthday." said bright-eyed Mrs. Mary Chatfield. But hardly 'just another' birthday. She will be 94 tomorrow.
Mrs. Chatfield plans to celebrate the event very simply. Her daughter, Mrs. Maude Buchanan of 914 Rio Vista SW, will hold an open house for friends.
"Mom," as she is known by young and old alike, has no secret formula for her long live. "I've just been fortunate enough not to have had any serious illness," she said.
In fact, her daughter added, Mrs. Chatfield had never been in the hospital until she was 93. Each of her eight children was born at home.
Mr. And Mrs. Chatfield moved to Kansas in 1900. Ten years ago she came here to live with her daughter. The rest of the family (there are five left) is scattered over the country.
Her children are Mrs. Eileen Compton of Columbus, Ohio; George Chatfield of Topeka, Kansas; Donald CHATFIELD, Kansas City, Jackson, MO., and Mrs. Doris Shipler of El Monte, Calif.
Mrs. Chatfield also boasts of seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
When Mrs. Chatfield was growing up and raising a family, modern science was changing the world with many inventions familiar to everyone today.
She doesn't remember her first automobile ride, but she does remember that motorists had to put up with bad roads, some of them stopping and starting in the middle of nowhere.
Her first telephone was a 19-party line in the country. "It was terrible," she said. "If anyone was talking, anyone could butt in and some people spent the day listening."
Mrs. Chatfield has spent her leisure hours playing either the piano or organ or reading. She is also interested in all people, her daughter said, and wants no sympathy or pity.
Through the years, Mrs. Chatfield kept a book of her ideas on life and its problems. Finally, when she was 75, she had time to collect the notes into book form.
In 1945, she published a small book entitled "Thoughts Along the Way." One of the passages concerns age. It reads "Old age is by many that period of life most dreaded..." But not so for Mrs. Chatfield.
