-----
Marjorie E. Henriks died peacefully with loved ones at her side at Golden Living Center in Pierre, SD on Tuesday, January 11, 2011.
A memorial has been established to the Shriner's Crippled Childrens Hospital.
Marge was born January 2, 1919, the youngest of eight children, in what is now Custer State Park, near the State Game Lodge.
Her mother passed away while Marge was still a baby, so she was raised by older brothers and sisters in Rapid City, Sturgis, and Wyoming. She attended Rapid City High School and graduated from Lead High School in 1936.
Shortly after high school she joined older sisters in the San Francisco Bay area. There she attended junior college and nursing school, but she later graduated from Black Hills State College with a teaching degree. Her three beloved sons were born in Oakland, CA.
Marge returned to Interior, South Dakota in 1951 to help her father on his ranch near the White River. She taught home economics and science at Interior High School through the mid sixties. In 1965 she married Buck Henriks. They ranched near Alkali Creek outside of Sturgis until they retired and planned to build a home on a "ranchette" near Bear Butte.
After Buck's death in 1977, Marge built a log home on the property and began splitting her time between Bear Butte and Apache Junction, Arizona.
In 1989 she began spending time with her companion Emil Koehn. The couple spent winters in Arizona and summers in Sturgis.
They golfed, socialized, travelled, and grew old together.
Marge was a hard working rancher who had her own brand, M P bar, since she bought her first heifer from her father in 1942. She was active with South Dakota Cowbells and South Dakota Stockgrowers Association for many years.
She valued education and was a much loved teacher. She loved to golf, travel, and socialize. She was an excellent seamstress and was often remembered for her flair for fashion. Whether the occasion called for western or golf wear, she was dressed for it.
She is survived by her three sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert & Mary Ann Pearson of Hoquiam, WA, Rodger & Patty Pearson of Pierre, and Howard and Diane Pearson of Black Hawk SD; eight grandchildren, Debbie Ellis, Michelle Pearson-Smith, Deanna Pearson, Julie Pearson-Falkner, Kesiah Frederick, Bruce Pearson, Kerry Leighty, and Mark Pearson; ten great granddaughters and two great grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her mother Maude Woods Hughes and father William S. Hughes, five sisters and two brothers, her loving husband Cecil "Buck" Henriks, her long time love and companion Emil Koehn, dear niece Betty Lodge and nephew Bruce Walker.
