She was born the eldest daughter of the late Robert George and Nettie Jenkins Mitchell, Margaret grew up in Waterbury, Conn., where she graduated from Crosby High School. After graduation, she began a lifelong passion for singing and performing, from Broadway Operas and plays to Thalian Association productions. She sang soprano in church choirs from early childhood, but loved none better than the Chancel Choir of First Baptist Church in Wilmington, where she was a member for over 38 years. During World War II, Margaret was employed with the American Time Corp., while her fiancé, Edward Joseph Chatfield Jr., a decorated Chief Petty Officer, USA Navy, served honorably in the Atlantic theater. Margaret and Ed were married in 1946, and spent the next 16 years traveling the U.S. building pipelines. In 1962, they settled in Wilmington. Margaret was very active in our community, volunteering with many organizations including The Wilmington Choral Society, Toastmasters, the Senior Center, Sunshine Club, American Business Womens Association, the Thespians, the Thalian Association, Cape Fear Hospice, The Red Cross (ten gallon club), and many other noble and worthy causes. Margaret was one of the last surviving members of Electra Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Thomaston, Conn. She was a proud and active member for over 60 years. After she lost her husband in 1971, Margaret worked for E.W. Godwin Oil and Queensboro Steel for several years. However, being a proud, courageous and high spirited woman, Margaret opened Sweet Nuthins Lingerie in the Cotton Exchange in 1977, which she operated until 1994. Also preceding her were her sister, Helen Carew, brother, Robert Mitchell, and grandson-in-law, Ronald Blackwell.
