Samuel B. Chatfield
Addison ~ The body of Samuel B. CHATFIELD, 85, whose death occurred Saturday June 16, at 4:30 p.m. at his late home on Tuscarora street reposes at the Mayer Funeral Home on Wall street, where the funeral will be held Tuesday, June 19, at 2:30 p. m. Interment will be made in Addison Rural Cemetery.
Mr. Chatfield was a native of Plattsburg where he was born February 23, 1860,* a son of the late Eben S. and Jane (Bligh) Chatfield. He came to Addison at the age of nine years and where he has resided for over three quarters of a century. He followed the profession of a mechanic all his life and was in business with his father here in a foundry machine shop for many years. On April 17, 1895, he was united in marriage to Theora Seaman, who died in Addison February 19, 1940. Mr. Chatfield has been retired for the past several years and had been sick the past five weeks.
Mr. Chatfield was well known in this community and was an honest and ambitious man. He was devoted to his home and family and was a kind and thoughtful neighbor.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Shumway of Corning; one son, Hobart CHATFIELD, Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren; Mary, Charlotte, Richard and Catherine Archer, Addison, who made their home with him since the death of their father and mother, several years ago; Private First Class Robert E. Shumway, now serving over-seas; Lee Shumway, Woodhull and Edward and Pamela, Los Angeles, California. Bligh Chatfield of Addison is a nephew.
*All the census records indicate Samuel was born in 1863 or 1864 not 1860. He first appears with his parents at age 2 on the 1865 New York State Census and on the 1900 US Census it shows February 1863 as his birth month and year.
