Qualified 1858; partner, Pearless & Sons, Solicitors, E. Grinstead. Commanded the E. Grinstead Coy. of the Sussex Rifle Volunteers 1863-6, as Captain, and again from 1871 to his death in 1885; Hon.Major 1881. In 1874 described as owning a Freehold house and land, Uplands. His widow was sole Executrix of his Will dated 5.5.1884, proved 24.8.1885; no children, but he had adopted Sidney Pearless, younger son of his deceased brother Charles, and provided for him in his Will. Sidney and his brother Charles were living at Uplands in 1881.

In 1871 Census, shortly before his marriage, he was living at Sevenoaks with his young brother Walter and 3 servants. In the 1874 Electoral Register for East Grinstead he was described as being "of Sevenoaks", but owning a share in a freehold house in Middle Row, East Grinstead. Died of Diphtheria 1n 1874. Will dated 1.9.1874, proved at London 9.12.1874; his brother William Austen Pearless and his wife Louisa appointed executors.

In 1861 Census, apart from being listed with his parents and siblings at home at East Grinstead, he was also included as a boarder at 9 High Street, Tonbridge described as a law student. In the 1874 Electoral Register he was described as owning a share in a Freehold house at East Grinstead, The Rocks.

Qualified as a Solicitor 1869. Living at East Grinstead when married in 1877, at 1 Thirsk Villa, Plaistow, Bromley, Kent 1878 and 2 Plaistow Rd, Bromley in 1881. Became a partner in Pearless & Sons, East Grinstead. By 1886 and until his death in 1911 he lived at Green Hedges, as did his widow until the house was sold in 1919. Commissioned in the East Grinstead Coy. of the Sussex Rifle Volunteers 1885-7. Will dated 14.4.1909, proved with codicils 6.2.1911.

In 1881 he was lodging at Langport, Somerset with Honor Gillett, described as a Solicitor's Managing Clerk. In 1884 when witnessing his brother Austen's Will he was described as "Solicitor, East Grinstead". At his marriage in 1886 he was a "Fishmonger" at Tiverton, Devon; of the three witnesses signing the Register, none was a Pearless. In 1901 Census he was a fish, poultry & ice dealer, living at Tiverton with his wife and children Reginald, Nugent, Mary & William. His brother Reginald left him a small legacy in 1905.

Her Will dated 28.2.1918 and Codicil dated 11.4.1918; Probate granted at London 28.3.1923 to Charles G de Rougemont as sole executor.

Served WWI NZ Army Medical Corps; Lt.Col.; Mediterranean Exped.Force, Mentioned in Despatches 12.6.1915; VD. Had 4 sons, 7 daughters.

His father's Will of 1874 made provision to enable him to complete his professional education. In a report of the "deaths of British Guiana colonial officials with salaries over 100 pounds", transcribed from The Parliamentary Papers, Colonial General series, is included "Mr E M Pearless, Assistant Resident Surgeon, Colonial Hospital, [aged] 25" whose death occurred in 1883.
