of John Chatfield.—Mr. Glenister (Jones and Glenister) defended.—Harriett CHATFIELD, wife of the prosecutor, living at St. Mary's road, West Hill, said she knew the prisoner, who lived in Manor-road. She had known the woman, who was married, since last, Mrs. Chatfield; I have been hunting all over the house, and looked in every cupboard, and only just found your work-box." Witness told her she knew the work-box waa always kept in the cupboard, and then she said she had been looking for the children's, " Mrs. CHATFIELD, I hope you won't accuse me of stealing your money." Witness asked her what made her think of such thing, and she said, "You know my husband has been out of work, and we are short of money, and as I knew where the box was kept you might, —John CHATFIELD, husband of the previous witness, said he handed box, containing little more than £8, over to his wife, on the 3rd of January. He counted the money in his wife's presence.—Fanny Horn, living at Earl-street, said she knew the prisoner, "Mrs. Chatfield gave it to me to pay away for her." Cross-examined by Mr. Glenister: The prisoner had shown her money before, but not in such large quantities. Witness believed the prisoner had pawned some clothes about the time she showed the money.—Harriett, —Harriett CHATFIELD, re-called, said she had never given the prisoner any money to pay bills.—Mary Ann Reeves, living at 81, Manor-road, said she knew the prisoner. Witness had formerly lived two doors away from the prisoner. the 9th January witness saw the, and Mrs. Chatfield had made her a present of half-a-sovereign. John CHATFIELD, Inspector of Postmen, one of its most capable members, has just celebrated his silver wedding. Mr. Chatfield has been connected with the local Post for over a quarter of a century, now holds a responsible position at the Sorting Office, Mrs. Chatfield was the daughter of Mr. Lester Metcalf. The wedding took place at St. Andrew's Church, October 1st, 1878.
