Colin,
the following (from my distant relative in the U.K. Brian Smith) is an interesting "Chatfield" tale, and you may be able to indentify with some of what he is telling me? There are a few errors in it, like the spelling of my mothers name which legally is "Eva", but she has always been called Yvette, not Evette. When I first posted to you I told Brian that I had done so, so I wonder if he too has been in touch with you yet?
Peter.

I have amassed so much information about the family over the past twenty years that it is difficult to know where to begin. My records are also in a bit of a muddle which makes sharing more difficult. But let me start by describing what I have found out so far about some early roots in Lewes.
I can unambiguously relate our family back to a John Palmer who traded as a hatter in Church Street, Lewes (subsequently changed to Friar's Walk between 1865 - 1869). The Sussex Weekly Advertiser of 8th December 1823 describes how the shop opposite All Saints church was opened 'through the benevolence of friends'. John married a Susannah Hook in Chailey on 11th April 1812. (Their daughter Susannah married Thomas CHATFIELD, the son of Robert Chatfield and Jane Pattenden, in Brighton in 1844).
John was listed as a 54 year old hatter in the 1841 census and was therefore born in about 1787. He died before 1851 so I have not been able to ascertain his place of birth. He does not figure in the ESRO composite baptism index for East Sussex 1700-1790. This could be because his family was non-conformist, or perhaps because he was born elsewhere.
