John Palmer who traded as a hatter in Church Street, Lewes (subsequently changed to Friar's Walk between 1865 - 1869). The Sussex Weekly Advertiser of 8th December 1823 describes how the shop opposite All Saints church was opened 'through the benevolence of friends'.
John was listed as a 54 year old hatter in the 1841 census and was therefore born in about 1787. He died before 1851 so I have not been able to ascertain his place of birth. He does not figure in the ESRO composite baptism index for East Sussex 1700-1790. This could be because his family was non-conformist, or perhaps because he was born elsewhere.
