Thomas John ("Tommy") Lipke was a lifelong resident of the Syracuse area. He successfully recovered after contracting polio as a little boy. He joined the Navy and served for three years during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Salisbury Sound with the Seventh Fleet.

His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing. After the service he worked as a long-haul trucker but once he was married, he worked locally as a truck driver, including for Motor-Freight Express, to stay near his family. He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

Tommy Lipke died after a long illness at the age of 30 years at the Veterans Administration Hospital, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters.
