=====
James Holmes Stevens was the son of Auguston Stevens and Sarah Ann Hill Armstrong. He moved with his family to Bastrop, Louisiana, sometime around 1845. He served as a Captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, in the Morehouse Stars, Company F, 12th Louisiana Infantry. By 1870 he had moved his own family to Pike County, Mississippi, where he operated a lumber mill.
James' daughter, Annie Olive Stevens Jones, on page 83 of her book, Stevens-Washburn With Related Lines (Ozark Guide Press, 1945), described her father as a "stalwart giant, [with] blue eyes".
