Auguston Stevens was born 05 Feb 1804 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, with his family about 1845 and died there of yellow fever on 20 May 1849. His first and only wife was Sarah Ann Hill Armstrong, daughter of Matthew Armstrong. Sarah Ann's grave is next to Auguston's grave.
According to page 41 of the book, Looking Backward: Memoirs of the Early Settlement of Morehouse Parish, by C.C. Davenport (Press of the Mer Rouge Democrat, Bastrop, Louisiana, 1911), "The first to open a store in the new town [of Bastrop, Louisiana] was Augustus [sic] Stevens."

1.James Holmes Stevens was one of the very early settlers of Monroe, La. He engaged in various business enterprises, one of which was a drug store which stood near the bridge across the Ouchita River. He married but had no children. He and his wife brought up the orphaned family of his brother, Chrysteon.
