Mr. John Chatfield Tyler, a very well known city figure, who at one time was assistant commissioner of Customs, says the Melbourne " Argus" of Saturday last, died suddenly at his residence, Woodside crescent, Toorak, last evening. He had for some time past carried on the business of an accountant in Collins-street, and on Thursday morning, while waiting for a tram to go to the city, he was seized with violent abdominal pains and was obliged to return home. Mr. Lempriere, M.B., was sent for; but Mr. Tyler's advanced age and enfeebled constitution made it impossible for ordinary remedies to be attempted. A consultation was held with Dr. John Williams yesterday afternoon; but later the patient, while taking a drink, collapsed, and suddenly expired. Mr. Tyler was born in 1831, and shortly after his arrival in Victoria in 1853 he joined the Government service, being first a clerk in the Audit Office, whence he was transferred to the Customs Department. He was in turn collector of Customs, immigration agent, and assistant commissioner of Customs, retiring from the position in September, 1880. He was secretary of a trustee company for some years, but of late has been in private business. In 1861 he married a daughter of the late Mr. William H. Hurt, and leaves three daughters and a son, Mr. John Chatfield Tyler, solicitor, Rockhampton, Queensland. WILL AND BEQUEST.
