Hazel and Jim farmed at Elm Township in Bottineau County, close to Newburg, ND, where they raised their children.
They farmed all their working lives.
Their daughter, Helen Montgomery was our neighbor, and we became acquainted with them when they came to visit Helen and her family in Tioga.

Jim married Hazel Helen Shurr in 1929. They farmed in Elm Township in Bottineau County, ND close to Newburg, ND. They raised their children on the farm.

Jim and Hazel came to visit their daughter Helen Montgomery and family, our neighbors, in Tioga, ND, quite often.

Jim preceded Helen in death (at age 56) by more than four decades.

Joe O'Connell, 78, Newburg, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, in a Minot hospital.

He was born Nov. 18, 1934, to James and Hazel O'Connell, near Newburg. He entered the Army on Oct. 26, 1954, and served with Company B, 5th Medical Battalion, during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1967.

Survivors: son, James, Newburg; sisters, Elizabeth, Karen, Debbie, Agnes, Helen and Marion; brother, Dwight.
