He served with the 8th Ill. Cavalry,Co.G. during the Civil War for almost four years. He was the black sheep of the family. He was twice married, had seven children, and abandoned both families. He was kicked out of the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Illinois for being AWOL once too often. He lived out his days in the Soldiers National Home in Milwaukee. His burial was arranged by his brother Oliver P. Chatfield of Escanaba, Michigan. Information in the 1900 Census shows that Silas was a Bricklayer and at the time he was living with his son John in Missouri. This same census data shows that Silas's birth date is March 1843. and he was 56 years old at the time of the Census. However it shows him as a Widower. There is somewhat of a mystery about this information. It looks like Silas was not quite telling the truth about his marital status. Both of his wife's were still alive in 1900. ===== USA Census, 1860 Name: Silas Chatfield Minor Civil Division: Union Township Age (Expanded): 16 years Page: 38 Affiliate Publication Number: M653 GS Film number: 803632 Digital Folder Number: 4233981 Image Number: 00418 ----- Silas Chatfield in household of William Tibbets, "USA Census, 1880" Event Place: Frederika, Bremer, Iowa Gender: Male Age: 36 Marital Status: Widowed [Not exactly true] Occupation: Stone Mason Race (Original): W Ethnicity: American Relationship to Head of Household: Other Birthplace: Illinois Birth Date: 1844 Father's Birthplace: New York Mother's Birthplace: Canada Page: 268 Page Letter: B Entry Number: 1256 Affiliate Film Number: T9-0328 GS Film number: 1254328 Digital Folder Number: 004240673 Image Number: 00624 Household Gender Age Birthplace Self William Tibbets M 51 Ohio Wife Louisa Tibbets F 49 Ohio Son Frank Tibbets M 22 Illinois Son Clark Tibbets M 18 Illinois Dau Laura Tibbets F 15 Illinois Dau Susan Tibbets F 11 Iowa Other Silas Chatfield M 36 Illinois ----- USA 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War Name: Silas D Chatfield Event Place: Springfield, Bon Homme, South Dakota Affiliate Publication Title: Schedules Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War,1890.
