John Lowell owned a large hog operation in South Dakota during the late 1920's and early 30's. During the depression of the early thirties he could not sell the hogs or even give them away as transportation costs were more than they were worth. The operation ended in bankruptcy. John was a handyman for a prominent citizen of Deadwood, South Dakota at the time of his death.

There has been a discrepency in regard to my grandfather's name. However, I am 99.5% sure his name is NOT John Lowell. All the records I see - including his WWI military records that I have - indicate Lowell James or Lowell J. A newspaper obituary I have somewhere in a box calls him James and his gravestone says Lowell. I can only go on what records I have and I have never seen John Lowell as his name. My brother, Lowell James, was supposedly named after him. Now, we can certainly wonder where his first son, Donald John's middle name came from, and I cannot say anything in this regard. So, all I know is that all the information I have never states John Lowell. I see only Lowell and Lowell James or Lowell J.

She appeared in the census in 1940 in Deadwood, Lawrence Co., South Dakota, USA. She died Diabetic seizure on 19 March 1943 at the age of 64 in Seattle, King Co., Washington, USA. Dode was buried in Hillcrest Cmtry., Deer Lodge, Montana, USA. She appeared in the census 1920/1930 in Cleveland, Bon Homme Co., South Dakota, USA. NOTE Dorothy died of a diabetic seizure during World War II. A picture of Dorothy is in posession of Michael John Chatfield.
