=====
Henry Summers Chatfield (1864-1932) was born in New York City and from age 6 was raised in Elizabeth NJ where he attended the Pingry School. In the 1880s he formed a business, manufacturing shellac and worked in that business all his life. He was known for his defense of denatured alcohol during Prohibition, the substance begin necessary to the cutting and development of shellac. Chatfield distinguished himself also with his charitable work in Elizabeth. He was a long time trustee of Sacred Heart Church, a founding member in 1907 of St Elizabeth's Hospital, and the first appointee of the Union County Park Commission (1920), where he supported the designs of Olmstead Associates for Warinanco Park. A memorial bench to his life and achievement (Chatfield died Oct 27, 1932 of pneumonia) looks out over a formal flower garden in the park. Cf M. H. Haertel, "American Contemporaries: Henry Summers Chatfield," Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, v. 22, no. 3 (1930): 299-300. Many thanks to Robert Batista for this citation
