Applied to Col. Gawler for free emigration 4 May 1838. Embarkation No. 1215.
Emigrated to Adelaide, Australia 1838 with sisters as governess to Governor Gawler's children, arrived morning of Friday 12 Oct 1838 on "Pestongee Bomanjee" from London having married on voyage.

Note from Stuart Smith. 'Harriet was nanny to Col. William Light's children (incorrect - to Governor Gawler's children) presumedly on Light's return voyage to South Australia, she was accompanied on the voyage by her sister Hannah and step-sister Elizabeth. She died in childbirth with her 13th child, the Port Arthur Burial Register records Harriet as wife of Assistant Superintendent Chatfield. Harriet spoke four languages, was a musician and vocalist.' (N.B. Light did not make a return voyage as he stayed in Adelaide after his arrival in 1836, dying there.)
