My grandfather (of Don Howell) came out in 1911 with possibly his sister Olive. See attached paper notice of his 50th wedding anniversary. My information on the Wakool was probably wrong not sure where I got that from – however the info below may also be wrong but definitely he came to Australia in 1911 because I can remember my grandmother telling me that she followed Ernest some years after him because her mother insisted that she meet up with him - as marriage was for life and that she had no right leaving him. Alfred Ernest (Ern as he was known) I believe he joined his brother who was living in Inverell at the time. My grandmother told me about how she arrived in Australia and then with three young children had to travel to Inverell (about 500 Ks) and all the time believed it was a god forsaken country – hot, dusty, brown grass and awful trees (eucalypts) etc. and queried why she obeyed her mother.
