=====
François Le Lièvre - are, a harpooner and boat steerer of a French whaling ship. You've been hard at that kind of work in the 1830s when your republican sentiments didn't sit well with the royal France of the citizen-king Louis-Philippe. So, far away from home, in the waters of southern New Zealand, you become acquainted with the Mäori harbor of Akaroa. Your captain, Jean-François Langlois, buys the area from local Mäori in 1838. Returning then to France, a company is set up to colonise this area of the Banks Peninsula. I join him back to southern New Zealand with less than a hundred would-be colonists aboard the Comte de Paris and we arrive in the Summer of 1840. Sailing into our rightfully bought land, at starboard I see the Union Jack fluttering in the breeze. Grasping the arm of Captain Langlois, all I can do is point. Calm as always - that's how we whalers are - Langlois seems already to know that it's been planted there only a few days before. And not wanting to risk a military confrontation, he lands all of us. Peacefully we're given our plots of land by the English. And for a while the colony thrives as a good whalers' haven.

A decade or so later, I marry a now adult lovely girl Justine Rose de Malmanche, once a passenger on that same 'Comte de Paris'. We make good. Of course, there were times of grief like when our lovely Josephine died, only two years old. But also times of happiness when for example our pretty wooden Catholic church - dedicated to St Patrick - was built and consecrated. We prospered.

It's difficult to imagine, but François Le Lièvre didn't die until 1902, when he was 94 years old.

Where he landed as a colonist was just a bit to the right of the beach you can see on this photo. There's a little plaque there to commemorate those brave French colonists. This is a view from so-called Settlers Hill.
