Charles J. CHATFIELD, 77, of 28 Kellogg Road, Cortland, died Saturday at Highgate New Medical Nursing Center, Cortland.

Mr. Chatfield was a native of Painted Post and was the news director at WHCU radio for 25 years, retiring in 1973.

He was the recipient of several state and national awards for news broadcasting, features, and commentaries, including the Peabody Award in 1947.

Surviving are his sister, Mary Chatfield of Ithaca; a brother, Arthur of Attleboro, Mass.; a niece, Nan Cavenaugh of Harrisburg, Pa.; three nephews, Charles, John, and Stephen CHATFIELD, all of Attleboro, Mass.; two grandnephews; and a grandniece.

Services will be 3 p.m. today in the E.C. Wagner Funeral Home of Ithaca, the Rev. Frederick Telecky officiating. Spring burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Corning.
