World War II Veteran

Jan. 4, 1924 - Sept. 8, 2005

MEDFORD, Ore. - Frederick Rudolf Brown passed away at age 81 on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who so loved his humor, interest in public affairs, care for the land and all creatures great and small.

Fred was born on Jan. 4, 1924, the son of Frederick R. Brown and Rebecca (Hussey) Brown. He grew up in Short Hills, N. J., and graduated from Hotchkiss Academy. During World War II, Fred enlisted in the USA Marines and served as a radar operator in the South Pacific. After the war, he attended Washington College in Chestertown, Md., graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature.

Fred married Marion "Molly" Chatfield on Dec. 9, 1950, and settled in Ridgefield, Conn., where he raised his four children. He briefly owned and operated a sand and gravel company and then began a career as a stockbroker at EF Hutton in New York City. He also began his life of civic involvement, serving many years as a member of the Ridgefield Board of Education.

In 1967, Fred's pioneering spirit took his family to beautiful Colorado where he worked at Dean Witter Brokerage Co. in Denver. In 1974, Fred started a new life in Delta, Colo., after purchasing an 80-acre farm high on a mesa. While Molly grew vegetables, Farmer Brown tended the alfalfa fields and devoted many hours affectionately caring for a small tree nursery. During these golden years, Fred traveled the world with Molly and developed his artistic talents as a photographer and watercolor artist.

In 1989, Fred moved with Molly to Montrose, Colo., where he cared for a smaller property of trees and other plantings and became more involved in civic affairs. He will be remembered in Montrose for his leadership as president of the Montrose Symphony, and as president and Building Committee Chair for the Montrose Public Library. Though retired as a stockbroker, Fred never lost his love for "following the market" and was an advisor to Molly's women's investment club.

Fred and Molly moved to Rogue Valley Manor in November of 2002. During these last three years of his life, Fred was enriched by new friends and activities, including bird watching, painting, an occasional croquet game, trips to the country, political discussions, public affairs classes, and "watching the market."

Fred is survived by his wife, Molly, four children: Marion Brown of Brunswick Maine, Becky and Michael Brown of Seattle, Wash., and Fred Brown of Montrose, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1840 E. Niagara Rd., in Montrose, Colo.
