E. Hale CHATFIELD, 64

Poet, Hiram faculty member

Services will be held Wednesday for E. Hale CHATFIELD, 64, who championed poetry as a Hiram College faculty member and poet-in-residence and was the author of 18 books.

Mr. CHATFIELD, 64, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Geauga Regional Hospital following an apparent heart attack at his home in Huntsburg.

Born March 26, 1936, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of Wilson and Anne (Webster) Chatfield. He had lived in the area for 30 years.

Mr. Chatfield joined the Hiram College English faculty in 1964. He served as dean of students from 1971 to 1974 and was dean of campus life from 1980 to 1982. He was granted emeritus status when he retired.

He was founder and editor of the Hiram Poetry Review, which first was published in 1967. The journal won the Ohioana Library Association's Award for Editorial Excellence in 1985. In 1993, Mr. Chatfield won the association's poetry award.

As a member of Ohio's Poets in the Schools program, he visited public schools to promote the reading and writing of poetry. He also developed an innovative program which enabled students to explore composition of poetry through the use of computers.

Mr. Chatfield was president of Chatfield Software Inc., which was formed in 1990 to design, produce and market educational software.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University and a master's degree from Rutgers University. He received a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts and a writing fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council. He also was the poet-in-residence at Yaddo, a prestigious artists' community in Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1975.

He was a member of the American Association of University Professors and was its Hiram chapter president in 1997. He also belonged to the Ohio Poets, Cleveland League of Poets, National Organization of Women, American Civil Liberties Union and the Society for Science and Literature.

He wrote 18 books, more than half of them poetry, and was published in many literary periodicals and anthologies.

He enjoyed computer programming, fishing and playing poker.

Survivors include his wife, Denise (Zadeik), whom he married June 22, 1957 in New York City; sons, Stephen of Rhode Island, Peter (Sallie) of Maryland and Alexander (Julie) of Florida; daughter, Jennifer (Robert) Wagner of Westlake; seven grandchildren; and brother, George (Anne) of Virginia.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Episcopal, 21 Aurora St., Hudson, with Stephen B. Smith officiating. Russell Funeral Service in Middlefield is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Christ Church new building fund or to the American Cancer Society.
