Hello ~ Anita, Colin, Catherine and Gordon: (Oct 2014.)

I do not believe Deliverance is a daughter of Abigail, Prob. a daughter of one on Marmaduke's other wives.

I have lost an email because of a computer crash several years ago. The writer was a descendant of Marmaduke Potter. To the best of my recollection, Marmaduke was from NJ, and he and Abigail returned to NJ after their marriage (18 Jan 1671/72 Killingworth, Middlesex Co., CT Vit. Rec'd.)

She stated their were no children found and Abigail seemed to disappear from records. She added Marmaduke had several marriages.

This is the beginning of our contact, my partial response (the rest of which and her response has been lost)

Hi Cheryl,
I am researching our Marmaduke POTTER genealogy and noticed your data on Ancestry.com showing a marriage between Abigail CHATFIELD and Marmaduke POTTER on January 18, 1670/71 Killingworth, Middlesex, CT.
Could you please give me your source this marriage? I notice your entry shows "VR" after CT. Did the information come from the CT Barbour Collection?
I am not yet sure that this is "our" Marmaduke POTTER, but ours did spend time in CT before he migrated to Woodbridge Township, (now in Middlesex County), NJ, so it is a good possibility.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.

Hi Joyce:
There has been so much controversy about Abigail Chatfield and who her parents were, I would really appreciate any info you might have on her or her possible descendants.
The marriage record was indeed from Killingworth, Middlesex, CT Vital Records. In fact I will add two paragraphs written by Harry E. CHATFIELD, he is a descendant of Thomas CHATFIELD, the brother of
George. The information he printed in his series of books called "Two Brothers and Friends, A Chatfield History and Genealogy" was carefully researched. He either had bible, or confirmed family or Community Records, such as Vital or Census. There was very little conjecture, and only a few mistakes found.
"George CHATFIELD, born Mar 20, 1624, was the youngest of the three brothers who settled at Guilford, New Haven, CT in 1639. Not much is known about his early years, but it has been ascertained that he helped farm the land on which Guilford was founded. Sometime previous to 1657 he married Sarah Bishop, who died Sep 30, 1657. Although previous genealogists have alleged there were no children born of this marriage, such a claim must be viewed with scepticism when KILLINGWORTH VITAL RECORDS reveal the marriage of an Abigail Chatfield to Marmaduke Potter on Jan 18, 1672. A thorough search of all the Chatfield's in New England during this period has failed to disclose any other possibility of Abigail's identity except that as the daughter of George, and so it has been recorded in this genealogy.
"Following the death of his first wife. George Chatfield married next, on Mar 29, 1659, Isabel Nettleton [b. Abt. 1640], daughter of Samuel and Mary Nettleton. In 1663 he moved to Killingworth, where he owned property and lived until his death, Jun 7, 1671. He had four known children, three by his second wife."
"Two Brothers and Friends, A Chatfield History and Genealogy", by. Harry E. CHATFIELD, 1990, Vol. IV, pg. 51. Published by Chatfield Western Publications, Box 5703, Security, CO 80931.
(Harry is now deceased, I do not know if any of the books are left in print to be sold. I have 5 of
his series.)
As you can see, if Isabel was the mother of Abigail, she could only have been born in 1660 at the earliest, and with her marriage to Marmaduke in 1672 only 12 years old. It seems that she could only have been the daughter of George and his first wife Sarah Bishop. The brother Thomas sold all his holdings in Guilford in 1650, married in New Haven in 1648, and all his children were born in Long Island, and all mentioned in his will. He had no daughter named Abigail. The third brother who immigrated died unmarried in 1646.
I have never been able to follow any lineage for Abigail and Marmaduke, it is very likely they left the area after their marriage. In fact I have never been able to discover anything more than the marriage record. They both appear in the marriage record and then disappear again. ...

Abigail definitely existed.

There is a marriage record in Killingworth, CT for Marmaduke Potter (sometimes found as Peter) to Abigail Chatfield on 18 Jan 1671/72 Killingworth, Middlesex Co., CT Vit. Rec.

Killingworth is where her father was living at the time of the marriage, and no other Chatfield's were in CT at this time, Francis having died and Thomas having removed to New York
