Obituary
The death of Mr. William Henry CHATFIELD, which occurred on Monday 15th April last, at his residence, the Old Falcon hotel, has aroused general feelings of sorrow among his numerous friends in the town and district, and evoked deep expressions of sympathy for the bereaved family. The deceased gentleman, who was 63 years of age, was only ill for a short time, and the news of his death came as a blow to many, for during his 33 years' residence in the town he had become well known and highly popular, gathering round him a wide circle of friends, among whom he was held in much esteem. In his early years the late Mr. Chatfield desiring to follow the sea as a calling, made several voyages, and it is interesting as an index to the adventurous spirit which characterised his boyhood days, to mention that he saw his twelfth birthday when off Cape St. Vincent in a sailing ship, Later, however, he decided to enter the banking profession and in order to fit himself for this received a part of his education, in Germany, where he acquired a love of classical music and literature, which he retained during the whole of his life. He was a familiar figure at most high class concerts in the town, and his knowledge of the arts mentioned made him a very agreeable companion, while his genial and open disposition also gained him a host of friends. He served with distinction for very many years in the Bank of England, retiring about ten years ago. The greatest sympathy is expressed on all hands for Mrs. Chatfield and his son, Mr. John Chatfield.

The funeral took place on Wednesday, at the Gravesend Cemetery when many friends were present to pay their last tribute of respect. The service was impressively conducted by the Rev. G. Griffiths, and the mourners were : Mr. John Chatfield (son), Mr. Herbert Chatfield (brother), Mr. William Hampshire (brother-in-law), Mr. Wallace (representing the Bank of England), etc.

With love, from Mother, Jack and Ethel.
