Constance Bucklin Chatfield of North Branford, Conn., died on March 26, from complications due to a stroke. She was born Mary Constance Matthews on Nov. 10, 1916, to Robert David and Ethel Walker Matthews who emigrated from Wales and settled in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1911. Connie attended The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn., and went on to Garland Junior College and Huntington Art School. In 1941, she married Vail Rhodes Bucklin Jr. and moved to rural Vermont to live for the next 40 years on Cedar Farm in Charlotte. In later years, she and Rhodes traveled and spent the winters in Fuengirola, Spain, and then Beaufort, S.C. In 1993, Rhodes died and Connie relocated to Evergreen Woods in North Branford, Conn. to be closer to her family. At the age of 80, she married Wilson P. Chatfield. After Chatty's death in 1998, she lived out the remainder of her life at Evergreen Woods. Connie made the challenging transition from coastal California to New England farm life and grew to love the communities, architecture, and landscape of Vermont. Her favorite painting subjects were the barns and meadows that surrounded her and she enjoyed day jaunts around the Vermont countryside in search of inspiration and antiques. A lifelong tennis player, she was often found on the courts at the Thompson's Point Country Club. True to her Welsh heritage, she loved music, played the piano, and had a lovely singing voice. A gracious, kind, and patient person, Connie touched all who knew her. Her children and grandchildren were the beneficiaries of her gentle guidance, support and love and she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her three daughters, Leslie Haines of Worcester, Vt., Pamela Burger of Williamstown, Mass., Lila Bucklin of Boston, Mass.; and her niece Joan Devour of Colton, Ore.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, in The Charlotte Congregational Church.
