Fernberg is a substantial brick and stone residence of four levels erected in 1865-66 for JC Heussler MLC, a highly respected businessman and Emigration Agent in Queensland for German shipping companies. It was designed by architect Benjamin Backhouse. Extensive alterations and additions designed by architect Richard Gailey were made in 1888-90 for the Hon. John Stevenson MLA, who had acquired the house in the mid-1880s.
He was one of Brisbane's pioneer merchants, built Fernberg, now Government House, and lived there for some years. He became a member of the Legislative Council in the second Queensland Parliament.
