BOISE — Our mother, Mary Imogene Jauregui, passed away quietly on the morning of Saturday, March 30, 2013, at The Cottages in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 92.
The last surviving member of the original Chatfield clan which homesteaded in Richfield, Idaho, beginning in 1910, Imogene will come to rest at the Meridian Cemetery with her husband, Luis Jauregui. They will live forever in our hearts, minds and souls. We will miss them both dearly.
After our father died eight years ago, Joy Reeb, the keeper of the Chatfield history and genealogic flame, asked our mother to write a short story of her life for the family archives. We are pleased to share an excerpt from that story below, in our mother's own words:
Mary Imogene first saw the light of day on June 18, 1920, in the ranch house of Mary (Maidie) Patrick Chatfield and Christopher Otho Chatfield at Richfield, Idaho. Grandmother, Mary Mariah CHATFIELD, Otho's mother, was a midwife and helped with the birth. The baby girl weighed nine pounds and was healthy even though she had a wobbly head, which she soon outgrew. She joined four siblings, Walter Alexander, Edna Arlie, Crandall Fayette and Allison Beth, and two years later by Leslie Odell.
Imogene started to school at age 6 (1926) and made many friends who remain friends today. In 1926, her mother took the four youngest children to Florence, Colo., to visit Grandma and Grandpa Patrick, Mom's parents. ‘We all rode on a train and played on the banks of the Arkansas River.'
During High School, Imogene met a Basque boy from Dietrich. Arlie taught school at Dietrich. She said those Basque boys were the nicest boys in school. After graduation, Imogene married the oldest one, Luis Jauregui, on July 3, 1938. She was never sorry. They had four children, Mary (1940), Paul (1941), John (1950) and Jim (1956). Who could ask for more?"
What set our mother apart was her lifelong love of family and children, for whom she fashioned magnificently colored quilts. But she also was dedicated to her work at the Nampa-Meridian Irrigation Company, the local Catholic Church and a variety of community activities in Meridian, Idaho, where she lived for 60 years.
We, Imogene's children, live on with our families: Mary in Kimberly, Paul (Vickie) in Boise, John (Christy) in Garden Valley and Jim (Tammie) in Eagle. Imogene leaves to this world a legacy of 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. May they all be as happy and prosperous as their (great) grandmother.
Our special thanks go out to the staff of The Cottages in Boise and Treasure Valley Hospice for their very kind service and dedication to our mother's needs in her last days.
Our hearts and thanks also go out to Mom's longtime caregiver and good friend, Laura.
We would also like to acknowledge all of our mother's extended Chatfield clan and friends who have made her life so wonderfully rich in God's pocket here in southern Idaho. Mom had a good life. You all made it sparkle. Thank you.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, at the Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 6300 N. Meridian Road in Meridian, followed by interment at the Meridian Cemetery.
