Obituary.
MR. GEORGE CHATFIELD: It is with regret that we have to record the death at Wooragee on Saturday last of Mr. George Henry CHATFIELD, farmer, who had attained the great age of 91 years and 9 months. Born and married in England, he was attracted to Australia by the reports of rich discoveries of gold, and came accompanied by his wife and one child. For quite a number of years he worked as a miner at Three Mile before taking up land at Wooragee. There he combined wood carting with farming, and for upwards of 30 years brought firewood to Beechworth. He was a man of tireless energy, and though Time bent his frame it could not damp his spirit, and he worked hard almost to the last. Mr. Chatfield took no interest in public affairs but devoted all his energy and thought to making provision for his large family and to improving his property, which was always a marvel of tidiness and order. He was for over 40 years a member of the Albion Tent of the Rechabite Order. He leaves a widow and the following family: Mrs. J. L. Newey. sen., 'Beechworth; Mr. George CHATFIELD, Nar Nar Goon; Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Derooke, Melourne; Mr. Joseph Chatfield and Mrs. J Klesthammer, Beachworth; Mrs. Swan, Sydney; and Mrs. R. Henderson and Mr. William CHATFIELD, of Wooragee. The remains of the worthy old gentleman, were interred at the Beechworth Cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral being attended by a large number of Wooragee and Beechworth residents, The Venerable Archdeacon Potter read the burial service of the Anglican Church, whilst Bro. the Rev. Geo. Tudball read the service of the Rechabite Order.
