He bought a Hardware Store around 1880 and started the 1st Bank in Cincinnatus NY with his son in-law George A. Haskins around 1899 where he served as President. He was the first person in Cincinnatus to own an automobile and a radio and served as Town Supervisor for a number of years where he was credited to have helped bring electric and water to the village. He is listed in the book "Cortland County Leading Citizens" from around 1900 and was 3rd cousin of Erastus Corning the 1st, the man Corning NY is named after.
