-----
Alice Emery STURTEVANT, also known as "Suzy" and "Mimi," was born Dec. 3, 1908, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Minnie Clark and Hugh Hildreth Emery. She died Sept. 2, 2008, in Dardanelle.
Her beloved son, Jim, and the love of her life, Lyle "Sturdie" STURTEVANT, preceded her in death.
Alice and Sturdie grew up in Garden City, Kan., where she graduated from Garden City Junior College. They married April 8, 1930, and their journey together took them to Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Montgomery, Chicago and Kansas City.
They made their home in Dardanelle when they became publishers of the Post-Dispatch in 1961, and retired when they sold it in 1976. They also owned the Times-Tribune in Grant City, Mo. They were instrumental in the formation of Dardanelle's golf course and she dubbed it "Bay Ridge Boat and Golf Club." They loved spending time with family and friends at their home on Bay Ridge Drive.
She excelled as a writer and newspaperwoman, actress and director, homemaker and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Dardanelle Book Club and volunteered at various libraries and hospitals. She also taught reading to adults.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Fritz Freeman and Judy and Joe Stocks; a daughter-in-law, Pat STURTEVANT, all of Dardanelle; seven grandchildren, Linda Freeman Newby and husband, Steve, of Russellville, Jim Freeman and wife, Darci, of Denver, Colo., Joey Stocks of New York City, Jill Stocks Lawrence and husband, Frank, of Little Rock, Anne STURTEVANT and Kelly STURTEVANT, both of Fayetteville, and Michael STURTEVANT and wife, Lexi, of Springdale; eight great-grandchildren, Decker and Drew Freeman, Christopher, Elizabeth, Paul and Lauren Newby, and Jack and Caroline Lawrence. They'll all miss her grace, intelligence, class, humility, practicality, beauty and most of all, her unconditional love for them.
