CANON NORMAN CHATFIELD
The Times of December last year carried an article
about a Mediaeval stained-glass window, reputed
to be the largest single expanse of such glass in
Britain, that was saved from collapse. The great
east window in Gloucester Cathedral was installed in
1350 as a memorial for the Battle of Crécy.
Featured in the picture in The Times was Canon
Norman Chatfield (1948-53). Norman is Canon in
Residence at Gloucester Cathedral with specific
responsibility for the repair and maintenance of the
fabric. This is an on-going task, working with English
Heritage and others. The Cathedral has a team of
stonemasons, some of whom are French.
Norman read Zoology at Fitzwilliam House,
Cambridge, then went to Ripon Hall Oxford for
Theology, was ordained in Chichester Cathedral, and
worked in parishes in the Chichester and Portsmouth
dioceses.
The March 2000 Edition of Old Varndeanian showed
a young Norman peering out of a tent at a scout camp.
Our picture today shows him in front of Gloucester
Cathedral.
Thanks to Ray Chatfield for sending this article and
picture.
Readers might also like to know that there were
several Chatfields at Varndean, including: Ray (1945-
50), Ray’s son Gavin (1972-78) and daughter Sally
Bradford (1977-79), Gavin’s wife Karen (née Stenning)
(1977-79). There was also Doug Moody (1940-46),
whose mother was a Chatfield.
The official record of pupils entering York Place and
Varndean (up to 1975) shows these Chatfields: Frank
(1891), Walter (1891), Hubert Comfort (1893), Edward
Burt (1895), Harry (1895), Leonard (1896), Arthur
