Virginia Irwin Kruger, A resident of Minneapolis since 1929, died December 27, 2009 at Hennepin County Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 103 years old. Mrs. Kruger was born March 30, 1906 in Belle Plaine, MN. She was the great- great-granddaughter of pioneer Minnesota jurist Andrew Gould Chatfield who came to the Territory of Minnesota in June, 1853 at the behest Gen. Henry Hastings Sibley to serve as an associate justice of the territorial supreme court. In 1854 Judge Chatfield founded the town of Belle Plaine, and made his home there. As the judge's oldest living descendant, Mrs. Kruger was named honorary grand marshal of Belle Plaine's sesquicentennial parade in July, 2004. A life member of the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers and the Belle Plaine Historical Society, Mrs. Kruger was initiated in the Order of the Eastern Star in 1924 when she was eighteen years old. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Daughters of the War of 1812, and the PEO Sisterhood. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Minneapolis for more than 65 years. Mrs. Kruger and her husband, Archie R. Kruger, who died in January, 1980, were inveterate travelers whose journeys took them to all fifty states and to three continents. Her daughter, Mrs. Anne Smith of Minneapolis, died on May 10, 2009. Surviving are her son, James Irwin Kruger of Boulder, CO, Mrs. Kay Barnard of Benicia, CA., seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Private inurnment planned at Lakewood Cemetery where Mrs. Kruger will be laid to rest next to her late husband.
