Joe was adopted by the Ferrises after his mother was hospitalized and his father died. He lived with the Ferrises since he was a baby. This was a very open adoption - everyone in the family and town knew that Joe was the son of Cora and Alfred Austin. By the way, Joe is still alive in 2013.
