William Chatfield Lundberg, 72, of DeKalb, IL passed away at Pine Acres Rehab & Living Center on Sunday, February 25, 2018. His death was the result of ocular melanoma that metastasized to the liver.

Bill was born December 15, 1945, at St. Mary's Hospital in DeKalb, the son of James Chatfield and Lillian (Berg) Lundberg. He graduated from DeKalb High School in 1964, and fifty years later had great pleasure presenting fireworks at the class reunion.

Northern Illinois University had a role in Bill's life from childhood to retirement. Northern students boarded in the family home on College Avenue. His parents operated the College Tea Room (better known as Jimmie's), a restaurant and student hangout near "the castle." Bill attended McMurry School on campus from kindergarten through 6th grade, and had the unique experience of taking a graduate course in his kindergarten room. Grades 7-9 were at the new University "Lab" School. As an NIU student, he earned undergrad and graduate degrees in the College of Business. This was followed by thirty years of working at NIU. After three years in the payroll office, Bill spent the rest of his career as business manager in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Friendships and activities with fellow NIU employees were a wonderful benefit of working at Northern.

Bill met Patsy Kelley in 7th grade. Ten years later they were married on July 6, 1968, at the First United Methodist Church in DeKalb.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy; sister-in-law, Maureen Kelley, of Sycamore; cousin, Patty Ann (Joe) Russo of Libertyville; and his dear Minnesota friends, the Parson and Belden families. They all share a deep sense of loss.

Frequent travel, much of it overseas, was a favorite activity of Bill and Patsy. They reached every continent except Antarctica. He enjoyed visits with cousins in England and Sweden; and meeting Patsy's pen pals in Australia, Poland, and Hungary. Other favorite activities included golf, skiing, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, bicycling, canoeing, woodworking, yard work, and Huskie sports. He also enjoyed rock concerts, especially those of his favorites-the Rolling Stones.

In recent years Bill's passion was founding, designing, and caring for the Berg Garden at DeKalb's Ellwood-Nehring House. The garden is a memorial to his Swedish-born grandparents, Carl and Anna Berg. The Bergs were long-time employees of the Ellwoods. It was their carved wood folk art that resulted in Bill's appearance on Antiques Roadshow.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2018, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. A private family burial at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb will take place at a later date.
