Left motherless before she was two years old, Emma may have spent 4 years in the Lutheran children's home. Records show that she was taken from the home by her father in 1899. At the time the 1900 Federal census was taken, she and her sister were living with their aunt Carolyn Buechele Wolfinger. Emma lived for many years in the home of Hartwell Shaw, a sheriff in Blissfield, Michigan, and his wife Ellen. Postcards that she later wrote to them were addressed to "mother and father", although it is believed that she was not legally adopted by them.

She was married when 18 years old. in 1915 she was living with her husband (Harry Chester Chatfield) at 3334 Wilson Place. Her father was living in her home at the time of his death in 1915. She died at the age of 26, only 3 months after her youngest son (Grant L. Chatfield) passed away. Hartwell and Ellen Shaw had a son, Leonard. Leonard Shaw and his wife, Bessie, then legally adopted Emma's daughter, Elaine.
