The WILLIAM MITCALFE (occasionally spelt Metcalfe) was launched in 1834 at Sunderland in Britain for emigration.

The Pope's (Graves on north side of the church), came from the Isle of Wight in 1838. George ran the Ryde Store and became Postmaster in 1850.

Living at Kissing Point was George Pope Snr, a shoemaker by trade. He and his wife Jane had four children. On October 1, 1841 a post office was opened at Kissing Point and the first postmaster was Mr Pope. The Pope family became the recognised postal personnel so when Mr Pope died his position was taken by another member of the family. It seems as if some of the locals had started to call the area Ryde while officialdom persisted with Kissing Point. The Rev George Edward Weaver Turner who, with his wife and George Pope, played an important role in the naming of Ryde.
