Family of Four Dies in Rutland Murder-Suicide
RUTLAND – Distraught over the breakup of his marriage, Donald Bishop of Rutland returned to his former home early Monday morning, unlocked the door went inside and shot and killed his wife and two young children as they lay in their beds.
Bishop, 31, then got into bed and shot and killed himself, city police said. Besides Bishop, the dead were identified as June Bishop, 31, Dawn, 7, and Matt, 5.
The state is treating the incident as a triple homicide and a suicide, Rutland County State’s Attorney James P. Mongeon said. Police said there was no evidence to suggest a struggle had taken place or any evidence that Bishop had consumed drugs or alcohol.
Autopsies will be performed today on the four bodies in Burlington, Mongeon said.
A short handwritten note was found on the front seat of Bishop’s car which stated that he could not stand the loss of his family and that if he could not have his children no one would, according to Lt. Rollie Powell, chief investigator with the Rutland police. Bishop’s small foreign car was parked behind his wife’s car in the driveway of his wife’s home, a white-clapboard, five-unit apartment building on the corner of Crescent and Grove streets….
