Lynn Cartwright, 72, of Conroe, Texas, died unexpectedly on October 6, 2014. Lynn was born on January 30, 1942, in Houston, Texas to Alfred Charles Chatfield and Lois Marie Bellard CHATFIELD, both of whom preceded her in death.
Lynn attended Charles H. Milby High School in Houston and graduated in 1960, after which she attended Sam Houston State University and received her degree in English. She met her husband-to-be, John R. Cartwright, on a blind date arranged by her roommate, JoAnn Steakley. They were married on January 6, 1961, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and remained married for fifty three years, until her death.
After receiving her degree in English, Lynn began her teaching career at Conroe High School, teaching ninth grade English from 1964 to 2004. We often joked that she taught the same subject, same grade and occasionally the same student. She was a dedicated teacher and friend to her students, who numbered in the thousands, over her forty-year career at Conroe High School. She acted as a tutor and class sponsor for many years and was very involved in homecoming activities every year at Conroe High School. For a number of years, she also served as a sponsor for the Conroe High School Junior-Senior Prom, and helped many very deserving students to make and sew their dresses for the Prom. Lynn was a kind, loving and generous person, sharing her talents for sewing and quilting with many family and friends. She hand quilted many quilts for friends and all of her children and grandchildren, giving special meaning and attention to each of them. Lynn shared many happy times and memories with her quilt-guild friends, who generously shared their time and talents with her over the years.
Lynn also had many friends from her long career of teaching at Conroe High School -- too many to name them all, but dear friends with whom she shared lots of fun and laughter were Susie Wallace, Marilyn Sommers, Janice Cromien, Donna Koliba, Frances Peoples, and Luan Brooks Langlie. They shared fun on many occasions, traveling in Texas, Colorado and other places. Lynn also had many friends from her quilting guild, with whom she enjoyed quilting retreats at Camp Cho Yeh in Livingston, Texas, the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas, and Camp for All in Brenham, Texas, not the least of which friends were Alice Watkins, Susan Stocking and Diana Stigleman.
Lynn is survived by her husband of fifty three years, John R. Cartwright, Sr.; sons J. Rex Cartwright, Jr. and wife, Shelly Cartwright; Keith Cartwright of Houston, Texas; brother Jeff R. Blankenship and wife, Theresa Blankenship, of Livingston, Texas; grandchildren Ethan Cartwright, of Midland, Texas; and Ashton and Cullen Cartwright, of New Waverly, Texas; cousin Kathleen Bellard Broyles, of Houston, Texas; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Graveside service for family and close friends will be held Friday, October 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, located on Highway 105 East at the corner of Tenth Street, Conroe, Texas. Pastor Carol Hoke will be officiating. Parking is limited in cemetery and on Tenth Street. Memorial Service information for colleagues, friends and former students to honor and remember Lynn will be provided at a later date.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to dear friends: Adolph and Elinor Tupa, and Anna and Greg Reising for their dedication and devotion to Lynn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite pet charity, as Lynn loved all animals, large and small.
