From granddaughter Agnes Brennan Chatfield
My Grandfather had an accident in the quarry, probably owned by my grandmother, as he came from Carrowntober (from memory) he never worked after that, thus my father had to go out to work, but I don't know when grandfather died.
As a child I remember playing in the small quarry in the field called The Rocks. The field, owned by the Marist sisters, was sold to a developer some years ago, it is now an estate of expensive housing. My sister, Mary, once said, she felt it was a shame the land had not been developed as a park, but I don't suppose many people thought about it, or indeed had any say in what eventuated. The land is very close to the old part of town and a prime site for housing.
My uncles Brass (Thomas Francis) and Kiddo(Joseph) went to Philadelphia after my Grandfather died, probably circa 1910, my dad was a boy of 14 and he had to go out to work, since granny was then alone. I understand much of our land, including what is now the Convent school, was sold to pay for grandfather's medical bills, there was no social security in those days. Bernie, now aged 84 built his house on dad's land, it fronts onto the main road. We have another field further up the side-road where Bernie has built, and in between is a field belonging to the Marists. I wonder if that land too originally belonging to the Brennan's?
October 2014.
