He was possibly fostered by a Mrs Mary Ann Chart (there were four Chart sisters, daughter Betty wonders if he was the illegitimate child of one of them). His father, she thinks, was a sea captain but this has been disputed. His name might have been DAVIES.

Moved to Steyning in Apr 1911 to work as a postman.

From daughter Betty: Father became a postman in Steyning for his first job. Here he met Ellen (eleven years his senior); they married secretly at Shoreham registry office c. 1911-12, (to her families’ disgust thinking him below her socially).
They later moved to Birmingham in search of work and lived in or near Wheeley’s road, Edgbaston, near Five Ways.
Betty has a George Chatfield shown on her genealogical chart. George married Mary Ann Cook in 1852 in Brighton. George was born abt 1828 at Lyminster, Sussex and she was born abt 1832 and on the 1881 census they show them at 67 Blat Rd, Hove with three daughters.
This George died in 1909 in Steyning.
Mary Ann couldn't have had Albert William Davies Chatfield in 1892 at her age of 64 - well unlikely.
I wonder if they might be grandparents.
