OBITUARY
C. Edward Raymond, 95, of DeKalb, Ill. died on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, in Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb.
Born in Aurora on Sept. 6, 1904, he was the son of Edward J. and Julia (Holslag) Raymond, He was a resident of DeKalb since 1909. Educated in DeKalb schools, he attended Northern Illinois University and the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. He was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, Journalism honorary, and a member of Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Fraternity. He was affiliated with the DeKalb Daily Chronicle as a carrier and in the mechanical, editorial, circulation, engraving and photography departments. He was a full-time employee at the Daily Chronicle form 1927 until January 1969, when he sold his interest in the newspaper.
He served as President of the Chronicle Corporation from 1954 to Jan. 24, 1968. He served in the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce from 1954-55. He was chairman of DeKalb County Zoning Board of Appeals from 1950-89, a member of Jacob Haish Memorial Hospital Board, a member of the DeKalb Park Board from 1934-45, and President of Kishwaukee Country Club from 1944-46. He was also a member of DeKalb Public Hospital Board from 1967-75, the Newman Foundation Board at NIU from 1959-70, Lay Board Trinity College Washington D.C., Honorary Executive Committee, Two Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America, and Holder of Silver Beaver.
He was director of First National Bank in DeKalb from 1945-83 and director of community relations at First National Bank from 1969-79. He was a member of the Union League Club of Chicago, the Palmetto Pine Golf Club of Cape Coral, Fla., Kishwaukee Country Club DeKalb, and the Executive Committee of NIU Foundation from 1976-82.
He received Humanitarian Award of NIU Foundation in 1982. He was a life member of National Press Photographers of America, DeKalb Elks Lodge #765 and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of DeKalb. He was named to the John Henry Cardinal Newman Honorary Society in 1965 and received the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service award in 1970 and the Law Day Award of DeKalb County Bar Association in 1976. He was President of the Chief Shabbona Council form 1962-63, a member of Citizens Committee of the University of Illinois from 1955-78, and a member of Consultative Committee to assist in selection of the president of the University of Illinois.
Edward was married to the former Kathern Chatfield of Sycamore on September 2, 1939. Survivors include a daughter Jane (Joseph) Smith of Houston, Texas; a son, Edward C. Raymond of Perkasie, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael and Julie Smith.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church of DeKalb, with father William Clausen officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery on Thursday, October 28, at 10:00 a.m.
