YOUNG MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT OF CHEQUE FOR £35

A cheque for £35, which was lost in Narromine on December 21, was cashed at the Railway Junction Hotel, Dubbo, on December 1 23, Det.-Const. Oakman said at the Narromine Court of Petty Sessions yesterday.

Clarence CHATFIELD, 36, of Narromine, was charged with stealing the cheque. Chatfield was arrested on January 9 by Senior Constable Ryan and Det.-Const. Oakman in Narromine. On the application of Det. Oakman a remand was granted to February 9.

26 MEN FINED
FOR PLAYING 'PENNY' GAME

Twent-six men caught playing two-up at, a "school" on the ouskirts of town on Couboran road last Saturday morning were fined £1 each at today's Dubbo Courts by Mr. F. Spence, S.M.

SYDNEY. - Charged with desertion,
Pte. Clarence Chatfield (NX54705)
told the District Court Martial that
he could neither read nor write.
He thought papers handed to him
upon his return to Sydney from
Malaya in December, 1941, were his
discharge papers, he said. He had
been told that he was discharged
from the Army.
The Court's decision will be an-
nounced later.
