Oliver enlisted into the army on 15 Feb 1915 at Grove Park, London and served in France first arriving there on 22 July 1915 he suffered from trench fever and was returned to the UK and admitted to hospital in Birmingham on 16 Oct 1916. He returned to France on 29 May 1917 and was again returned to UK and admitted to hospital in Warrington with trench fever on 8 Feb 1919. He was discharged from hospital and the army on 3 March 1919.

Oliver served in the Army Service Corps and held the rank of Lance Corporal.
