Soon after 1851 he went to London to be a police constable. He was based in Platt Street, St Pancras where there was a police station and he lived in lodgings there.
In 1860, alongside a colleague, he heroically saved a shop girl from a fire in Wilstead Street, St Pancras. The two constables were awarded silver watches for their bravery.
