CHATFIELD, Mr. John

Rothbury, MI John H. CHATFIELD, age 71, passed away Nov. 15, 2016 peacefully at home. He was born Sept. 27, 1945, in Ludington, to Harlan and Viola (VanRiper) Chatfield.

John was the third born of six children and was a 1963 graduate of Mason County Eastern High School. He was a proud U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, serving from 1967 to 1969 with the 101st Airborne on his first tour and the 25th infantry on his second tour. John was also active in the National Guard and completed a total of twenty years of military service. He was a member of the Montague VFW Post 3256 and the Holton American Legion 397.

He married Deborah Swears on October 30, 2004. John was employed by Misco (Howmet and Alcoa) for thirty-six years before retiring in 2006. He and Deborah have also been Muskegon Chronicle motor carriers for many years. John enjoyed the great outdoors while hunting, fishing and gardening, taking pride in his prized strawberry patch. He loved playing cards, watching the Lions play football and visiting with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his children, Eric (Marlene) CHATFIELD, Emily (Troy) Near, Edward (Kim) Chatfield; grandchildren, Dylan Towne, Isaac Near, Ivy, Reagan and Sawyer Chatfield; his brother, Donald Chatfield (Julie Demko); sisters, Janice (Larry) Laskonis and Ginny (Dave) McClure; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Stanley and Beverly Swears; sisters-in-law; Denise Felt, Deanna Steven (Dan Adsit), Dawn Burrington; brothers-in-law, Steven Swears, Stan (Dawn) Swears; two stepsons; six stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Chatfield and his sister, Margaret Cargill.

Visitation will be held Sat. Nov. 26, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. with military honors at 3 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby. A luncheon will follow at the White Lake VFW Post 3256, 9370 Walsh Road in Montague.
