BEAVER DAM - Dorothy Boock, age 89, of Beaver Dam, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital. She was born a "coal miner's daughter" on Jan. 29, 1914, in Gatliff, Ky., to Colin "Carl" and Icie "Lona" (nee Reed) Chatfield. She graduated as a registered nurse from Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing and was married to Dr. Robert F. Boock (a medical student at Louisville General Hospital) on March 23, 1942, in Louisville, Ky.
They enjoyed nearly 61 years of marriage. After several moves during World War II, they lived in Louisville until 1949, when they moved to Beaver Dam. Dorothy spent several years as a private duty nurse at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Beaver Dam. First and foremost, she was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was a faithful member of St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam where she served on various committees and on the school lunch program.
While raising five children, she also provided many volunteer hours to the Red Cross, serving as Dodge County Blood-Bank chairperson for more than five years during which the program flourished, often exceeding expected quotas. She was a member of the state and Dodge County Medical Auxillary for many years where she served as county president and was child health care chairperson at the state level. During this time, she helped institute many programs statewide related to child safety. Dorothy's interests were many, ranging from poetry to politics and she was a devoted Packers fan. She was a very creative and original person, often described as "spunky." She will be remembered for her quick wit, her philosophical outlook and wonderful sense of humor as well as her spirit and tenacity. She left the world a better place by her presence.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert F. Boock of Beaver Dam; five children and two grandchildren, Barbara (Tom) Kelly of Green Bay, Patricia Boock of Milwaukee, Margaret Boock of Savannah, Ga., Robert F. (Rafat) Boock and their daughter, Kaylyn, of Stafford, Va., Susan (Dan, deceased) Ketelsen and their children, Kyle, Sam, Sarah and Stephen Ketelsen, of Lodi; a brother, G.W. Chatfield of Sumter, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Oscar (Amy) Boock of Worthington, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Marguerite (Bob) Allen of Milwaukee; three nieces, two nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law; and a son-in-law.
A worship service for Dorothy May Chatfield Boock will be on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. at ST. STEPHEN'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH in Beaver Dam with the Rev. Mark Lindner officiating.
