Hezekiah CHATFIELD, '26, labourer, was charged with stealing at the parish of Lindfield, on the 1st of January last, three turkeys, valued at 155., and four fowls, valued at 55., the property of Stephen Lowdell. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Mr. Johnson, I knew Chatfield's brother's house, which is rather more than a mile from the place where the chickens were kept; the foot-marks came in the direction from the prisoner's brother's residence towards the fowlhouse. can swear they are the same foot-marks, at John Chatfield's (prisoner's brother's) house. saw the prisoner on Friday, when he came to the house. He went to bed at about "half-past three in the afternoon; and I followed at about half-past seven, and slept in the same bed with him. The prisoner, name is Chatfield. There did not appear to any other person living the house. Mr. Cobbett then appealed to the jury on behalf of the prisoner; and, after some little deliberation verdict of guilty was returned.
